Models for inspiration and Rudolf Olgiati #architecture

Olgiati in Flims

Rudolf Olgiati has designed quite a few single family homes in Switzerland, but what makes his work unique I think was his ability to translate into modern the traditional aesthetics of Swiss architecture – playing on materials, form and techniques. Unfortunately I can’t find much information on Olgiati that is not in German – but some students from Eindhoven University made some beautiful models of 12 of Olgiati’s houses. They appear sort of rough, but comparing the models made to the example of one of his buildings (picture above) this roughness is definitely justified. Made of white clay, wood and slate they convey the materiality of the buildings very well.
